Summary

Sometimes, even Haruhi doesn't know what she wants!

As the SOS Brigade rings in the New Year with a shrine visit, there's a surprising lack of supernatural or reality-bending phenomena。 Despite this, Kyon is as wary as ever。 After all, Haruhi has a tendency to turn even the most mundane events into impossible uproars! That danger could not be more apparent than when their club activities lead them into the world of school wonders and whodunit mysteries。 Even peaceful moments are remarkably eccentric when Haruhi is around。。。

I was happily surprised to discover a new installment of this classic OG light novel series。 Haruhi Suzumiya is one of my most fondly remembered binge reads after I finished the anime series and I think it has one of the most creative sci-fi premises I’ve come across。 I was happy where the author left off but more of Haruhi is always welcome。 I don’t consider this to be a series that necessarily needs a conclusive ending; just be forewarned this volume does not make any concrete steps towards on I was happily surprised to discover a new installment of this classic OG light novel series。 Haruhi Suzumiya is one of my most fondly remembered binge reads after I finished the anime series and I think it has one of the most creative sci-fi premises I’ve come across。 I was happy where the author left off but more of Haruhi is always welcome。 I don’t consider this to be a series that necessarily needs a conclusive ending; just be forewarned this volume does not make any concrete steps towards one。 The volume contains the normal slice-of-life episodes of the SOS brigade but also introduces a new character and hypes up the intrigue around an existing side character。tIt starts with a relatively benign episode where the brigade celebrates New Years with a cute interaction between Haruhi and Kyon。 The second is another typically amusing episode of the Kyon, Koizumi, Nagato, and Asahina frantically trying to prevent Haruhi from accidentally changing the world with her imagination。 The third story really reminded me of how meta this series can be with the characters debating mystery novel tropes and subsequently winking at the audience as the brigade attempts to solve a mystery。The aforementioned mystery was not as interesting as it could have been to hold my attention as I was reading (Note: This might be an unfortunate consequence of translation from Japanese to English because some parts of the mystery relied on quirks in the Japanese language)。 It was more of a Hyouka style mystery where the focus was more on character interactions of the brigade +1 new character。 But once the mystery is solved and the unnerving implications of events in that chapter become more clear, I felt transported back into the classic calm uneasy strangeness I’ve come to expect from the Haruhi Suzumiya LNs。 I find myself looking back at what I thought were benign moments for added meaning and considering whether Kyon’s interpretation was the correct one。 My current view (view spoiler)[Is that Nagato was the one that wrote the mysteries, not the mystery club president。 She already agreed to write something for the mystery club and there was definitely more going on between T and Nagato。 Though I need to reread her prior literary club submission。 (hide spoiler)]Overall 4/5 stars。 It gave me mostly what I wanted from a new Haruhi Suzumiya novel but some parts went on too long and did not quite hold my attention。 。。。more

I adore these characters so my rating is quite a bit higher than it would be otherwise。 The stories here are of the low-key character interaction style that I think is my preferred mode compared to the more bombastic tone of some of the other books。 I especially liked the Tsuruya story for featuring her and piling on plenty of references and little meta comments and things that I find very fun but I'm sure plenty of people don't。 It's also nice if you're looking for some introductions to differe I adore these characters so my rating is quite a bit higher than it would be otherwise。 The stories here are of the low-key character interaction style that I think is my preferred mode compared to the more bombastic tone of some of the other books。 I especially liked the Tsuruya story for featuring her and piling on plenty of references and little meta comments and things that I find very fun but I'm sure plenty of people don't。 It's also nice if you're looking for some introductions to different mystery authors。 I enjoyed it! 。。。more

It is so good to finally read a brand new Haruhi Novel。 although it wasn't as action packed as some of the other novels, and on the slower side, it was still a very enjoyable read。Yen Press are still making basic grammar mistakes as always (Seriously does no one proof read any of their light novels?), But, I can forgive them, just because it was so good to be back at North High with Kyon and the gang。 It is so good to finally read a brand new Haruhi Novel。 although it wasn't as action packed as some of the other novels, and on the slower side, it was still a very enjoyable read。Yen Press are still making basic grammar mistakes as always (Seriously does no one proof read any of their light novels?), But, I can forgive them, just because it was so good to be back at North High with Kyon and the gang。 。。。more

This book has two profiles but anyway。。。First short story is great。 Second is funny but very filler。 Third is。。。 almost unbearable tbh。 Not because it's bad, its just mostly metatextual conversation。 And part of it is a mystery that relies on knowledge of the Japanese language。 I wish the translation had localised it so that English readers could participate, then maybe add a footnote explaining what it meant in Japanese。 I mean if theyre going to localize "yare yare" to "jeez" and not use honor This book has two profiles but anyway。。。First short story is great。 Second is funny but very filler。 Third is。。。 almost unbearable tbh。 Not because it's bad, its just mostly metatextual conversation。 And part of it is a mystery that relies on knowledge of the Japanese language。 I wish the translation had localised it so that English readers could participate, then maybe add a footnote explaining what it meant in Japanese。 I mean if theyre going to localize "yare yare" to "jeez" and not use honorifics anyway, youre not authentic in the first place。 I think this suffered because the translator could not cross-reference fan translations like the first 7 or so novels did 🕷🕷I would only recommend this one to serious fans who want more content, it's not much of a light read。 。。。more

Η νέα ιστορία δεν είναι κάτι το συναρπαστικό, μα χρονολογικά λαμβάνει χώρα μετά το τέλος του The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya (Final Part)。 。。。more

Remember when I wrote that review of 'The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya' hoping we would get a new novel in 2017? HA! Oh past me, you sweet summer child。。。 Nonetheless my wish has come true and in true Haruhi fashion, it came to be 3 years after I asked for it (I should have taken into account the time my wish would take to reach Hikoboshi and Orihime)Even if I had already read 2 of the stories through fan translations, my terrible terrible memory allowed me to enjoy them as if reading for the first time, and I absolutely loved it。I love the SOS Brigade and I've missed the SOS Brigade, reading Kyon's narration just warmed my heart, being back with the gang was absolutely spectacular。The Tsuruya story was great, Nagaru Tanigawa is being so cheeky with the whole metal rod thing。。。 the Chekhov's gun principle is mentioned in the novel, and I legit thought he was going to give a purpose for the metal rod, but nope。It was more of a "remember that thing? Yeah, it will come into play。。。 eventually", and I love that for us hahahI don't even know what to write here anymore, I just felt I should write a sequel to my desperate cry from the review I wrote when I reread the series。And if it takes 3 years from 'writing down your wish' to 'new book being published', I'll just ask for a book 13 right hereplease 。。。more
